What's up with all of the elephants?
I’ve always loved elephants. I think there is graceful beauty in their giant bodies and the ways they move them. I love that they are social, herd animals and they are fiercely loyal and protective of their own. They are especially good at taking care of their babies and elderly and represent a healthy community that comes together to take care of each other. When I created Getting Real Counseling Center, I found myself even more drawn to elephants than before. I found decorative versions of them and decided I wanted them to adorn our new office. Elephants are protective and said to bring good luck. They are also animals known for their compassion, intelligence, wisdom and complex emotions. I can think of no better spirit to bring to our new space! They represent gentle strength and wisdom and this is a lot of what counseling is about for me. I try to help people find the wisdom and strength within themselves and will be the holder of hope and strength until they can find it within. Counseling is also a place to name “the elephant in the room” and talk about the things that are normally avoided in other contexts. It’s a place to “get real” and deal with the real issues that are impacting you at any given time and do that in a space that is nonjudgmental, supportive, and gentle, yet challenging. And, they are just freakin’ adorable!
